Kim Cattrall: Beauty Tips From The Sex And The City Star

Kim CattrallAs I get older, I love to see those just a bit ahead of me in age still looking and feeling fantastic. They are wonderful role models for growing older disgracefully, with great clothes, great hair and great makeup.

There’s no reason why we can’t all be like that if we make the effort. In fact, age can be a great leveler when it comes to beauty. The beauty at 20 may take her looks for granted and not look so good at 50, whereas the average looking 20 year old may take good care of herself and have a great personality that is reflected on her face as she ages.

One such role model is Kim Cattrall, the “Sex and the City” star, who played Samantha Jones, wearer of beautiful clothes, brazen seducer of men. Of course, the real Kim is not like her alter ego, but she does have the same ability to turn heads in her mid fifties. Even she is surprised

“I’ve been playing sexually aware women most of my life. At this point I expected to be playing moms and wives. It’s exciting to play a femme fatale.”

And the men at website AskMen that provided that quote, agree that her age is no barrier to attractiveness

“If age has in any way subtracted from her sexiness quotient, it certainly doesn’t show.”

How does she look so good?

I have done a bit of sleuthing around the web to discover her beauty secrets.

Natural Hair Coloring and Soft Styling

You don’t have to make do with your natural color hair if it does you no favors. Mousey or gray hair may look good on you but if it doesn’t, hair color is one of the easiest changes you can make. Remember, you can keep it looking natural without it actually being natural. This takes a bit of skill, rather than slapping on home color and hoping for the best. See how Kim’s Hair colorist Marie Robinson achieves Kim’s look with several layers of color.

“Kim Catrall has light-brown hair, so I bring her base up to a dark-blond color. Then I add highlights on the crown and around her face to achieve a brighter look, and caramel tones as lowlights to give her hair dimension. The end result is many layers of warm blond and light blond.”

A softer hair style is very flattering for all ages. Kim’s medium length cut is versatile enough to wear up for glamorous events or down for more relaxed occasions where the “just got out of bed” look (in a sexy rather than messy sense!) is more appropriate.

Diet and Exercise

As you get older, the effects of a poor diet show with startling speed on your face and body. Celebrities often pay for their good looks with a lot of restraint in what passes their lips.

Kim Cattrall is said to follow the Hamptons Diet which was created by Fred Pescatore, MD, a former medical director of the Atkins Center. This diet takes the best from several diet plans including the Mediterranean and South Beach Diets as well as Atkins.

“It encourages users to choose lean meats, healthy fats, and restrict carb levels. And like the Mediterranean Diet, it focuses on whole foods (organic when possible) that are minimally processed and lots of fish and low-carb veggies. There is also a big emphasis placed on omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats (MUFA) — especially (actually, almost exclusively) macadamia nut oil. The thought behind this is that MUFAs can help both with metabolism and longterm weight loss. Not too far off the mark since research has indicated that MUFAs help stop the hunger signal so you don’t overeat — basically, you feel fuller, sooner.”

Couple that with a strict fitness regimen and despite her age, Kim is able to stay slim, toned and supple and ready to show off her body in beautiful clothes on the red carpet (or without on set!)

It seems if you want the body, you have to pay the price and it’s nothing to do with how much money you have.

A softer simpler makeup look is much less aging than bright colors and harsh lines. Kim always looks well groomed without going over the top with makeup like you often see with other celebrities. Her makeup choices are simple and show off her smooth porcelain skin and youthful glow.

Kim’s daytime look is soft and natural, which goes so well with her coloring.

“Kim knows that less is more when it comes to makeup. She highlights her sparkling eyes and glowing complexion with soft warm hues like copper, gold and cinnamon brown. Peachy tones also work well on Kim and compliment her golden locks. Cattrall likes to use Bobbi Brown eye shadows, which can be mixed and matched to suit her skin tone.”

Kim also knows how to “glam it up” without going over the top to get a Hollywood star look. She often chooses red lips and retro black eyeliner for the red carpet. Coupled with touches of highlighter around eyes and on cheekbones and her blond hair she looks every inch the star she is in her well chosen gowns.

Even with this more glamorous look, she softens it a bit. For example, she uses lip liner just to define the bow of her lips and not to outline her whole mouth and she never goes beyond red lipstick into more unnatural colors such as burgundy or purple.

Away from the limelight, Kim prefers not to wear makeup.

“Cattrall lets her skin breathe with minimal makeup if any, opting only to curl her lashes — even though they rest underneath her usual vacation day armor of a big, fabulous pair of sunglasses. “Don’t ever take away my eyelash curler!” she warns. “I go nowhere without it.”

Skin Care

Kim’s good looks are the result of great beauty routines and she is reluctant to go under the knife

“Asked if she is thinking about plastic surgery in the near future Kim replied that she is not ready for such procedures and that she is doing her best to take care of her body through less invasive methods.”

What keeps Kim’s skin looking so young?

In 2011 she was asked to represent Olay Total Effects anti aging line and did a TV campaign The Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash. This quick clip shows her in this campaign and she is said to be delighted that Olay were forward thinking enough to choose an older woman as their brand representative. (Normally younger models are chosen even for anti aging products…)

I’m not sure if she is still using the range. Although there’s no reason why she wouldn’t as the products work well, there are a number of anti aging products seem to claim that she is a fan.

In any case it is clear that she looks after her skin

“I have very fair, sensitive skin, so I have to be really careful. You really have to respect and not abuse what you’ve been given naturally. I love to do exfoliating, not just my face, but my body too.”

Kim manages to find the perfect balance between looking current and sexy without making it seem like she has tried too hard. There is never any idea of “mutton dressed as lamb” with her. She thinks that we need to get away from the idea that sexy is going over the top

“I always think that less is more,” she says. “There’s a point where you look in the mirror and say ‘Is this too much?’ and if you even have that inclination than it usually is….It’s a real balance of finding your comfort level and also something that represents you, but at the same time mix it up occasionally. Have fun with fashion–it’s an expression of yourself.”

Kim Cattrall’s Best Beauty Secret of All

“I’ve exercised and dieted most of my life, because I’m a big girl — I’m not a tiny little thing. But I’ve realized that the most important thing I can do to look good is just treat myself well, whether it’s getting a nice, long massage or just lying low and not going out every single night. I’ve learned that I can’t have a packed work schedule and a packed social schedule and a packed personal life. I need to just have time to myself to sit and breathe and unwind. Having my priorities in order has really helped me look better, fresher, and more relaxed.”

Just a few years behind in age, it would be great to follow in Kim’s footsteps, if not her four and a half inch Manolo Blahniks….
